Billy Merkosak.

I have recently acquired two of his mesmerizing whale bone sculptures.

This man is an artist who never fails to meet my expectations. Just when I’m sure I have seen the best of his work, he amazes me with a more innovative, more enchanting work of art.

This particular Drum Dancer is a case in point.

Look at this piece!

The most intriguing feature in my opinion is the face. It is so finely detailed, that for all intents and purpose, it looks like a photograph!!

And that contrast between the flesh and blood face and the primal nature of the whale bone body creates an uneasy tension.

Is Merkosak suggesting that man is imprisoned within his body or perhaps within his environment? And even if he is encumbered by his physical self, he can still be joyous and celebrate life as he bangs his drums!?

When I take multiple views of a sculpture it means that the piece demands this kind of exposure.

In my opinion, the art of Billy Merkosak must be in any complete Inuit art collection.

This Drum Dancer would be an excellent choice for any collector; novice or experienced,

The carving comes with the Igloo Tag of Authenticity.
