Masterpiece Sculpture! Museum-quality Carving!

Moe Pootoogook has carved yet another magnificent bear!

Each one of Moe's bear are distinctly different than the ones before them.

BUT what is unique about this sculpture, is that it is much larger than the small to medium size bears that Moe usually carves and this is a Walking bear.

When I checked the gallery archives, most of the Pootoogook bears are Dancing bears.

This is a magnificent bear.

The rich dark green and yellow colours of the stone are perfect.

The colours are soft and velvety which contrasts the masculinity of this bear.

Look at this piece.

Start at the nose and savour every aspect of our Bear.

I love the round ample hind end of the bear.  But I also appreciate the square chunkiness of the head.  It creates tension and interest.

For such a large and muscular animal, one would expect Moe to give this creature a fierce, frightening and aggressive face.

Instead, I see a gentle, almost resigned look on his face, as if this bear understands and accepts his place in this world.

He knows he will be feared and hunted. He will always be in defensive mode.

When I look at this bear, with his head hanging down slightly, I wonder if he is tired and hungry or if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This bear needs a home.

Moe Pootoogook is a talented and skilled carver.

His bears are sought after by art enthusiasts and by those who just love bears.
