Masterpiece Sculpture! A Piece of History!

Emily Illuitok was renowned for her inspirational and charming carvings of Inuit life and Arctic wildlife

In fact, Pope Benedict XVI was given a gift carved by Emily, such was her International reputation.

These scenes that depict early Inuit life, are essential in the documentation of the modern history of the Inuit.

Emily's art often reflected her personal survival in the bitter cold of the Canadian Arctic.

I suspect that this vignette portrays a typical day in Emily's life.

This is an emotional sculpture.

I have never seen an Inuit carving quite like it.

At first glance, (from behind), the seated woman looks like a real person.

Her shawl/coat drapes around her narrow hunched shoulders.

This is an older fragile woman who I believe is preparing to eat with her male companion.

Emily has carved a poignant scene that describes the shared history of these two Inuk people.

As you explore all the nuances of The Golden Years, you will understand how valuable these Vintage Inuit scenes are to those who seek to understand all the cultures of the world!

One day, The Golden Years could easily find its way into an Art Museum like the WAG..
