This Louie Makittuq bear is large and imposing!

This is a carving with mass, with strength, and with the spirit of an imposing Polar  bear.

He is peering inquisitively over his shoulder.

Any moment he will collapse down onto all four legs and lumber away across the ice.

The dark stone, the beautiful peeping eyes, and the overall sheer mass and size makes this sculpture not only a vintage like piece but also a highly prized museum piece.

Makittuq is renowned for his Polar bears.  Polar bear enthusiasts immediately recognize this classic Polar bear standing posture.

To initiate play, Polar bears will stand up on their hind legs with their front paws at their sides and chins lowered to their chest.

They often wag their heads from side to side to signal that it's time to play.

Gjoa Haven is best known as the resting place of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition.

This community of carvers is very remote and because of this isolation, these artists  have a wonderful unique style.

Inuit art enthusiasts look for Gjoa Haven sculptures because they add a sense of astonishment and innocent energy to their collections.
