This is an amazing piece by Kamookak. The different coloured tones of the stone is captivating. The Gjoa Haven artists who carve these daily life scenes are fastidious in their detailing.

The realism of these scenes are accentuated by the accessories (the necklace with its bone medallian, arrow, bow and quiver, separately carved bone hands and face). Indeed, without these dynamic elements, the scene would be quite mundane.

Even the seal, which has popped its head out of the hole in the ice, is endowed with tiny eyes, nostrils and ears. This type of carving is painstaking in such a small figure. These details surely reflect the love of Kamookak for his subject.

The astute Inuit art collector recognizes the relevance of including these poignant vignettes in their collections.

All carvings have a story to tell but these motifs offer the viewer an opportunity to envision life as it is or perhaps as it once was, for the Inuit.

Fortunately Moses Kamookak is an experienced and masterful carver of these  glimpses into life in the Far North.
