Masterpiece Sculpture! Magnificent Vintage Carving!
The Baker Lake Carving Program was started by the Canadian Government in the 1960's.
Barnabus Arnasungaaq was one of the first artists.
Barnabus was a print artist and a carver.
He is more renowned for his contemporary Inuit sculpture.
He was a pioneer in the 1st generation of Inuit carvers and was one of their decorated artists.
I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE FROM HERE is a an age old subject.
A loving Mother carrying her child on her back as goes about her daily chores.
The Baker Lake stone is hard and difficult to carve.
Most carvers kept detail to a minimum; the pieces are usually abstract as you see with I Can See.
Abstract simply means that a subject's detail is more "suggested" than realistic.
But in Inuit carving the subject is usually easy to identify.
The stone is usually a matte black.
This medium green colour is soft and gentle.
The Mother and Child theme has been cherished throughout the ages so don't be surprised if you are immediately bonded to this sweet carving.
