Masterpiece Carving! Museum quality Sculpture!

George Auqsaq is from the very remote hamlet of Igloolik in the Kitikmeot region.

Artists here often carve in the grotesque style like this Mother and her infant child.

At first glance, this Inuit woman is a typical mother, holding her child over her shoulder in a blanket.

She seems peaceful and serene.

BUT look again.

The blanket of the child ends in a fish tail!

The woman has long exaggerated arms and hands and her right foot is either absent or distorted at a very unusual angle.

Then, there are strange scratch marks on her abdomen.

Is this a symbol suggesting the baby may have just been born.

This is what great art is about.

It provokes discussion, and challenges the viewer to think beyond the obvious.
