This Inuit Hunter is captivating.

His facial expression is what intrigues me.

He is confident with years of experience as a Hunter.

Is he cold?  Is that why his arms are folded tightly across his chest?

Or is he impatient, as he waits for his prey to cross his path?

The Gjoa Haven artists who carve these daily life scenes are fastidious in their detailing.

Look at his accessories (his harpoon and rope).

Our Inuk's parka, leggings and boots morph into one piece.

Usually the human figures are bulky because of their heavy outer clothing but our Inuk is tall and slim.

The realism of these scenes is accentuated by all these details.

Without them, the scenes would be quite mundane.

Although the carving has a pink hue in the images, this piece is carved with caribou antler which has the most wonderful taupe and light tan colours and the open pores of the bone.

The sculpture is smooth and mellow.  Its warmth draws you in.

All carvings have a story to tell but these vignettes give the viewer an opportunity to envision Inuit life as it now or perhaps as it once was.

Fortunately for us, Moses Kamookak is an experienced and masterful carver of these  glimpses into life in the Far North.
