Barnabus Arnasungaaq was one of the earliest participants in the Baker Lake carving program established by the Canadian government in the 1960's.
Barnabus created a number of prints and drawings but he is first and foremost recognized as a leading figure in contemporary Inuit sculpture.
He is a pioneer in the 1st generation of Inuit carvers and also one of the most highly decorated artists.
HEART AND SOUL is simple.
A loving Mother carrying her child on her back as goes about her daily chores.
The Baker Lake stone is hard and difficult to carve.
Most carvers kept detail to a minimum; the pieces are usually abstract as you see with Heart and Soul.
The stone is usually a matte black.
This medium green colour is soft and gentle.
The Mother and Child theme has been cherished throughout the ages so don't be surprised if you are immediately bonded to this sweet carving.
