SIDEWAYS is a magnificent vignette of Inuit life.
Henry Napartuk was known as an imaginative and versatile artist.
He was a carver, a jewelry maker, and a printmaker.
His subjects were known for their humour and mischievous nature.
With Sideways, we are witness to an Inuit fisherman lying on his side on the ice.
Next to him is the hole he bored into the ice.
A weighted fishing line is bobbing in the water, beckoning to the fish to take hold of the hook.
Is the fisherman asleep?
Sideways is holding his "HooK" waiting for a fish to bite, but is he taking a snooze?
He is less motivated to keep watch because he has already caught a fish.
His cozy shelter is warmed by the sun beating down on the skin roof.
He is protected from the cold wind.
"I'm just going to close my eyes . . . zzzzzzzz".
Clients are mesmerized by these scenes of daily Inuit life.
This scene could be 50 years old or 2 years old.
Also, the complexity of the scenes are fascinating.
With so many details and moving parts. viewers are entranced with connecting all the dots.
A fishing hole, a fishing line leading to water, a landed fish, a hook, a fisherman and his tent made of wood and sinew.
It takes lots of patience and pride in your craft to carve such an intricate piece.
During his career, Henry's carvings were part of many Inuit ArtExhibitions throughout North America.
His pieces are in Collections in Galleries and Museums in Canada and the USA.
