DONNER "TWINS"?

Let your imagine run wild.

A Hunter with two heads?

Or a hunter carrying a young child in his parka?

A Take your Child to Work Day?

Probably a young child because his mouth is wide open as if talking non-stop.

And the Adult head looks dismayed.

Wayne Puqiqnak is the son of internationally renowned Master Carver Uriash Puqiqnak.

Father and son are one of the most famous Inuit carving DUO.

They are highly respected for their SIGNATURE Grotesque style of carving.

Donner has all the Grotesque style features.

His large yellow inlaid eyes are located at the top of his forehead!

Now he can see in all directions.

His teeth are small, peg-like and located in a haphazard fashion.

Grotesque style DOES NOT MEAN the carving is a MONSTER.

Grotesque is a term used in visual arts to describe a type of FANCIFUL decoration.

The decoration was inspired by the ornaments found in excavated rooms (grottoes) in certain ANCIENT ROMAN buildings (15th century).

Fans of the Grotesque style (which is almost exclusive to Gjoa Haven) delight in searching for these unique and intriguing figures.

See our notes on The Gjoa Haven Collection.
