CAN WE BE FRIENDS? is an astonishing sculpture.
There are very few Inuit artists who excel in carving vignettes of Inuit life.
Jimmy Iqaluq and Moses Kamookak (Gjoa Haven) are two of them.
Peter K. is the third.
These are carvers who create scenes that will forever bare witness to the traditional life of the Inuit.
Peter has carved a scene of an Inuk in his kayak (umiak) fervently paddling home with a seal on board.
His harpoon is raised as if he is going to strike the Beluga whale beside him.
But the friendly countenance on the Whale's face suggests that the Inuk may be having second thoughts.
We hope he is.
The colours and contrasts of the stone are gorgeous.
Peter's perfectly executed scenes take your breath away and leave you marveling over how a person can carve such a poignant story from a rock.
