Clayton Keknek is fast becoming one of those artists whose pieces are immediately recognizable.
This means that when you see one of Clayton's transformation pieces, you know immediately that this is a signature Keknek sculpture. Every artist wants to achieve this status.
Not everyone does.
Look at this amazing piece. This is a signature Keknek carving.
The widely spaced inlaid eyes contain the life force of this creature. Without them, this would be a piece of stone.
See the large round flat head? Keknek's facial features are often absent or distorted.
The body is large, clunky and deeply ridged. The size of the tail is exaggerated.
Keknek's transformations are NOT realistic. Some art lovers are put off by this abstract style of carving.
But Clayton's Abstract style is exciting and refreshing. His sculptures gently forces the viewer to use their imaginations.
It encourages the viewer to accept the piece as it is; to avoid the desire to translate the sculpture into the more common realistic style of carving.
It's not always easy.
The more I look at this piece, the more I connect to its unconventional essence.
Keknek is a gifted artist whose transformation pieces will elevate the calibre of your Inuit art collection.
