Inuit art: Walking Bear
Artist: Ulami Tunillie
Size: 9" long, 6" high, 4" wide, 10.1 lbs
Community: Cape Dorset, NU
This is a fine example of Tunillie verging on the abstract. His road towards abstraction is via the streamlining of body and shape while always maintaining the essential bearlike character of the object; its power, its ferocity, its bulk. When working on a small scale, Tunillie achieves this by exaggerating the bulkiness of the forms.
The elongated neck, compressing the torso into the realm of abstract, is a deliberate exaggeration by the artist to create further exhilaration.
This is also a rather large piece, a beautiful showcase for any room. It undoubtedly deserves its own podium or table.
