Inuit art: Caribou
Inuit Artist: Bobby Anavilok
Size: 7.5" across, 8" high (3" antlers / 5" body), 2.5" wide
Community: Kugluktuk, NU
Provenance: April 26, 2019. We had to wait over a year to receive Bobby’s famous lifelike caribou.
This is a beautiful rendition of a real life caribou. In order to achieve true grace and a timid stance for this gorgeous creature, Bobby had to painstakingly carve each leg. This manoeuvre requires an artist to be tremendously focussed and patient. Caribou are not a popular subject among Inuit artists because the legs are so fragile and prone to breaking.
This particular caribou is fashioned with dolomite which was mined from a different location. The result is a spectacular copper tint superimposed over the steel like dark grey stone. The result is a rich realism.
Anavilok’s loving depiction of Northern wildlife is celebrated among the avant garde circles of Inuit art. Bobby’s craft is recognized as being distinctive and edgy. His sculptures are a mainstay for Inuit galleries. I am always elated when I receive my Anavilok carvings.
This wonderful caribou comes with the Igloo Tag of Authenticity. Don’t let this piece slip away.
