This is a mother and child carved gorgeously by a very old Inuit artist who helped pioneer the industry. The minimalistic features of this piece are relevant to the type of basalt stone found in Baker Lake. It is a very dense and hard volcanic stone only found in this region of the North.
This piece was done in an older generation of carvers which is why it is much more raw in appearance which is a feature that is greatly admired among Inuit art enthusiasts.
