Inuit art: Dancing Bear
Inuit Artist: Markoosie Papigatok
Size: 8" tall, 5" wide, 4" deep
Community: Cape Dorset, NU
I love how Markoosie sculpts a plump hind end for this sweet dancing bear and adorns it with an artful crisp little tail.
It's a small component of the sculpture, for sure but it's proof of Markoosie's commitment to his trade.
Markoosie is one of my go to carvers.
This means when I am planning my buying trips, I have a mental list of which artists' carvings I want to explore. Markoosie is always at the top of that list.
Like you, I want to be awed. There must be beauty and and sometimes a quirkiness. I insist on quality.
Most of all, I want to feel a bond with the piece.
Whether the sculpture is 4" or 24", I ask myself, "Would I put this piece in my own collection" and if the answer is yes, then I ask myself, why?
This bear had my heart immediately. Does it have yours?
