Inuit art: Walking Bear
Artist: Sapa Ashoona
Size: 3.5" long, 2" high, 2" wide
Community: Cape Dorset, NU
This is a fine example of Ashoona verging on the abstract. His road towards abstraction is via the streamlining of body and shape, but always keeping in mind the importance of retaining the essential bear-ness of the object; its power, its ferocity, its bulk. When working on a small scale, Issaluk achieves this by exaggerating the bulkiness of the forms.
The neck, compressing the torso into the realm of abstract is a deliberate exaggeration by the artist to create further exhilaration.
This is also a rather large piece, a showcase for any room and would deserve its own podium or table.
