This carving is a rarity of sorts for Ikkidluak as it is made with a green stone. The most famous Inuit artist in the world, Lucassie Ikkidluak, rarely carves his beautiful muskoxen anymore. We received the last one he made 6 months ago as he carves only several per year. For health reasons, the strain it puts on his joints and his arthritis, Lucassie Ikkidluak has limited himself to only making two or three muskoxen this year. He says these will probably be the last ones he ever makes.
This muskox is the largest he has ever attempted. The beautiful hump, the symmetry, the detail and the flow of the piece render this as a museum artifact.
Its proportions, its stone and its symmetry are perfect. There are absolutely no defects in this piece; it is an incredible muskox. I was lucky enough to be the only one in the entire world to get it. I was able to obtain this piece from another gallery who decided to close down.
For avid collectors, the line up to acquire one of Ikkidluak's muskoxen is immense. His muskoxen are of the most demanded carvings in the world. This piece will be worth double in less then 5 years from now at any auction.
This muskox in particular is not only made by world famous Lucassie Ikkidluak, it is also this style of muskox that have toured all over the world through international Inuit are exhibitions and fairs.
For a gallery to obtain one, it takes about a year of waiting. Acquiring a Lucassie Ikkidluak muskox is not only a rare find but a real investment as well. When Lucassie retires from carving, any muskox by him will be worth double in value overnight.
