Stone: Dolomite, 40,000 year old Mammoth Mole Tooth
Provenence June, 2019 - Damien only does 2 or 3 muskox like this a year. These are made with mixed media. He uses a 40,000 year old mammoth tooth (a prehistoric animal) for the eyes. The muskox itself is draped in a beautiful copper brown dolomite stone.
In this intriguingly ambiguous work, Iquala brilliantly fuses surface texture and form into this piece. He proves that texture need not be applied simply as decoration or as a "realistic detail". When applied wisely it can become an integral element of the form in itself. The result is an almost heraldic composition.
The effervescent alabaster stone not only highlights but contrasts beautifully against the off-white horns. This brings to life the muskox which illuminates its immediate surroundings.
