This carving fell on my lap. It is literally tide for the nicest medium sized bear I have ever seen. The other one was by Henry Evaluardjuk. The pictures will speak for themselves.
If i can add my own opinion, first off, to see a carving done in a black uniform marble stone like this is a rarity. This is as premium - high quality type of piece you will ever see. It is a centrepiece. The crisp lines and smooth curves go hand in hand with the mirror shine polish riding the surface of this deep black stone. And black it is, finished to a mirror shine.
You will probably never see a beautiful black bear like this again. To add to this piece, it was done by the worlds top Inuit artist - Samwillie Amagualik. This man is the very best in bear carvings.
Like most people in his community, he carves mostly wildlife subjects in the beautiful stone that he quarries himself. In years past he and his family would often spend weeks camping near the two local quarry sites. Amagualik’s sleek, low-slung prowling bear reminds us of Art Deco animal bronzes. The overall form is stylized, but particular attention is paid to the snarling mouth. It’s a striking modernist sculpture.
This is a exceptionally well made bear done in a silky smooth dark stone. A must have for your collection. Proportions, size, stone color, texture, finesse are all A-1 on this piece.
A centre piece for any art gallery.
