This work's poignancy can be partly explained by its relative rawness in the sense that it resembles some of the great emotive sculptures created by artists from the isolated community of Kimmirut.

This beluga whale is representative of their Northern habitat, and in particular, Baffin Island. An enclave, located in the Baffin Strait, is where whale hunting is a necessity to the survival of its isolated people.

Done in a smooth and refined serpentine stone, Qimirpik persists an endearing sense of perfection while achieving a raw calmness of savagery.

The finesse, curvatures and details of this piece are incredible. The dark black and pale green stone contrast superbly together. Even the base is executed exceptionally well. This is nothing short of a masterpiece.
