Museum Quality!!!

This magnificent walking bear shows Kavik at his audacious best. His workmanship in the naturalistic portrayal of a bear is excellent, but the truly remarkable aspects of this bear is its concept and sense of balance in the striding variety.

For his age, Kavik is considered by several of his peers to be the most skilled carver in Sanikiluaq. His style is naturalistic, with an emphasis placed on movement and precision. Kavik is perhaps best known for his lovely hunter creations, but as this elegantly streamlined Walking Bear shows, his stone sculpture was of superb quality as well. This poignant sculpture is reminiscent of Joe Kaviks famous walking bears and in all likely hood was a mentor and teacher to Kavik.

Like most people in his community, he carves mostly wildlife subjects in the beautiful stone that he quarries himself. In years past he and his family would often spend weeks camping near the two local quarry sites. Kavik’s sleek, low-slung prowling bear reminds us of Art Deco animal bronzes. The overall form is stylized, but particular attention is paid to the snarling mouth. It’s a striking modernist sculpture.

This is a exceptionally well made bear done in a silky smooth stone. A must have for your collection. Proportions, size, stone color, texture, finesse are all A-1 on this piece.

A centre piece for any art gallery.
