Toonoo Sharky began his tenure as a carver at the early age of ten and entered his first exhibition while still in his teens. He is widely recognized as a major carving talent.
This transformation subject is typical of his best work; it epitomizes the Cape Dorset aesthetic and shows off Sharky's consummate technical skill, flair and humour.
This work by Toonoo Sharky is decidedly sombre compared to previous works. It depends not so much on artistic virtuosity as mood for its impact. The presence of emboldened eyes and a hint of the birds overall ecstasy, together with the overall totemic format gives us hints of possible meanings.
This is the absolute nicest transformation piece I have ever witnessed anyone carve. Everything comes together perfectly in this piece. The crispness of the white eyes, the incredible detail, the gorgeous dark stone and even the expression on the bird's face. The life and motion of this piece make this bird almost want to lift off on its own. The curvatures, and polish are all triple-A.
Toonoo Sharky has won numerous international exhibitions and awards.
