MASTERPIECE CARVING

Provenance - February 2020
I have had the great honour of knowing Jimmy Iqaluq for many years. He is a gentle, talented and hard working man. He was the first Inuit carver to trust me to sell his now famous loons. Little did I know how iconic Jimmy’s loons would become. Even now I still use Jimmy’s exquisite loon as my logo.  This poignant sculpture of a Polar bear hunting for food is heart rendering. Jimmy told me he worked very hard on this piece and it took him a long time to complete.
There are very few First Generation carvers who are still active in their craft today. Meet Jimmy Iqaluq.  He is a First Generation artist as well as one of the top Inuit Master Carvers.

Jimmy is famous for both his exquisite loons and his vignettes. His “scenes” or vignettes always tell a beautiful story of Inuit life. Sometimes, Jimmy’s scenes are portrayals of historical events; or he renders a simple act of traditional Inuit life such as building an Igloo. And sometimes, his vignettes tell an agonizing story of life in the far North.

This piece is a beautiful depiction of a hunting scene with a Polar bear who has been successful in killing and devouring a seal. Blood is dripping from the seal carcass onto the snow. Within the scene is a smaller bear, who appears to be anxiously awaiting his invitation to dinner. And further down the slope, is a large somewhat worried walrus who is hiding under the ledge hoping the largest predator of the North doesn’t become aware of his presence!
Only Iqaluq could carve this kind of emotion and character into his creatures. Only Jimmy can carve the daily struggle of the Arctic animals into a stone.
This is why Jimmy is considered a Master carver. The bravado, the crispness and beautiful display of this hunting scene are the elements that make this sculpture a Masterpiece.

There is no doubt.  You will not find another piece like “Polar bear hunting” in Inuit carving today. This is a Museum piece. If you do not have a Jimmy Iqaluq vignette in your collection, do not pass up this chance.
This is also an investment piece. As our Master carvers slow down in the frequency of their carvings, it is these iconic pieces that will appreciate tremendously in value in the near future.
