Inuit art: Seagull
Inuit Artist: Pat Ekpakohak
Size: 6.5" tall, 6" wide (wing span), 6" deep
Community: Ulukhatok, NU
Material: Muskox horn
Here is another extraordinary iconic sculpture that is somewhat of a rarity. It's very rare to see seagulls carved. Seagulls are a very prominent bird who live off of the shores of most Northern communities.
In this piece, the artist has synthesized the salient aspects of the muskox horn. The composition is not only charged with meaning but it is aesthetically pleasing as well. The seagull's face is beautifully framed by the brilliantly, electrically and softly undulating plane of pink and red muskox horn.
