These two carved seals depict their Northern habitat and in particular, Sanikiluaq. An enclave located in the Hudson Bay, seal hunting is a necessity to the survival of its isolated people.

Done in a smooth and refined argillite stone, Iqaluq persists an endearing sense of perfection while achieving a raw calmness savagery.

This is an exquisite set of seals carved by Inuit artist Josie Iqaluq from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut.

What caught my eye is the jet black coloration used for the stone. I also particularly like the heads of the two seals as well as the etching mark spots on the back. Josie Iqaluq is well known for his playful fun loving seals. They make wonderful gifts for weddings or anniversaries as they convey peace and harmony. It is very symmetrical and round with a gorgeous smooth finish to it. A property among Sanikiluaq art which makes it so famous.
