This is a breathtaking sculpture by Jaco Ishulutak, one of the last active pioneer Master carvers.,

For ten years I have been the director of Inuitsculptures.com. As each year passes, I have seen Jaco carve with greater passion and fervor.

This Sedna is one of his finest pieces. It reflects the extraordinary carving bravado of this 73-year-old artist.

Jaco’s work is exceptional in its degree of openwork carving and detail. His style is highly energetic and expressive.

Sedna's bone septre is the perfect accessory for this queen of the ocean.  Her long hair mimics lacy marine vegetation. She may have been caught unaware and is caught in an underwater current, tumbling and tumbling along the ocean floor. 

But more likely, she is twisting and swirling, casting her spells as she inspects her underwater  kingdom. She is always in control. 

Jaco produces gorgeous pieces of art time and time again. My heart skips a beat every time I see one of his sculptures. Within 2 seconds, I knew this carving was coming with me.

The question I ask myself now is should I keep this piece for my own collection?

Every Inuit art collection must have at least one Jaco sculpture.  Each of his subjects is a complex character fashioned with a bit of fantasy and irony. No one else carves human subjects like Jaco.
