This is an adorable rendering of a bear and walrus friends.

Our pair are kindred spirits, who are looking out for each others’ safety in the extreme conditions of the harsh Far North.

The cute bear has a beautiful red tongue, which is made from a stone found only on the shoreline of Jimmy's boyhood campsite (where he was raised in an Igloo).

When I saw the red tongue, I was hooked. Rarely does an Inuit artist use a red tongue in their sculptures. I have had only three bear carvings with red tongues in my gallery and they all belonged to Jimmy.

Adorning a sculpture with a red tongue is pure genius and requires infinite skill on the part of Jimmy Iqaluq.

Our Arctic friends are beautifully displayed with the soft undulating pale green argillite stone. The stone spotlights every rippling muscle, every facial feature of these two carvings. The details are immaculate! Each claw is inserted individually; a painstaking endeavour.

This piece is is complex and sophisticated and yet it is playful and heart warming at the same time.

This would be an ideal gift for an Inuit art collector “in the making” such as a teenager or it would bring a new sense of joy and uniqueness to an existing collection. If Jimmy Ilaquq is one of your favourite artists, I would suggest you jump at the chance to include this carving with the “red tongue”.
