Provenance: April 26, 2019. We have waited over a year for Bobby to carve this incredible Hunting Merman.

Master carver Bobby Anavilok has crafted this gorgeous rendition of a Merman hunter with poise and originality. I have never had such an unusual carving from Bobby. This mythical being draws back his harpoon, waiting for the exact moment to strike his prey. The proportions of the upper body to the lower “fish” body is perfect. The arm muscles are taut and lean. I love the crisp lines of the Merman but it is his eyes that impart strength and intensity to the piece.

The light grey stone is mesmerizing. The contrast between the Merman’s upper body and the dark green seal is one of my favourite elements of Bobby’s piece. But look at this creature from behind. Look at the perfect angles between this hunter’s raised right arm which holds his harpoon and his torso. His entire upper body is angled in preparation for the kill as he balances on his Merman tail. Incredible!

Bobby lives in the remote northern community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut. There are very few carvers in this small community. We are so lucky to be able to offer our clients this very special Merman carving.
