Provenance June 2021 Many Inuit art galleries are struggling to survive during the shutdowns caused by the global pandemic. Because many galleries are not able to purchase art, many artists like Derrald Taylor are contacting me directly and showing me some of the most beautiful carvings that I have seen in my career as a curator of Inuit art.

Derrald Taylor’s life like Caribou have always mesmerized me.  Generally, his carvings are detailed and perfectly proportioned.

Caribou delight us.  The pumpkin-colored stone is the perfect selection to accentuate the muscular but lean body of this magnificent beast. The spirit of this particular caribou is also bold and regal. He strides with purpose, brandishing his antlers with pride and a subtle ferocity.  Few Arctic mammals would attempt to engage this fearsome Caribou in battle. This particular Caribou sports the most magnificent antlers. This attention to detail is pure Derrald Taylor! I have come to expect this kind of love for perfection from Derrald.

Taylor is fastidious in his proportions. His work is exquisitely beautiful.  His depiction of Northern wildlife is celebrated by the avant-garde circles of Inuit art collectors.

The sense of motion and the dynamism Derrald brings to his carvings are a testament to the talent one must possess to be welcomed into the world of the top Master carvers like Nuna Parr and Ruben Komangapik.

Taylor’s work has toured internationally and has been included in countless publications, Inuit art journals, exhibitions, and museums.
