Inuit art: Muskox
Inuit Artist: Pits Qimirpik
Size: 6" long, 4.5" high, 2.5" deep
Community: Cape Dorset, NU
Stone: Serpentine (gorgeous dark stone, our favorite)
This friendly muskox has a beutiful set of inlayed eyes, with teeth sticking out, and a gorgeous black stone.
The grooves in the stone, the texture, and the tilted head bring a depth I rarely ever see in Muskox carvings. The smooth facial expressions contrasting with the rugged torso give this piece an intensity that warrants it to be in a museum.
One day when Qimirpik is old and grey, beautiful carvings like this will be worth so much more.tate University, Baton Rouge, LA
