At first glance, this exquisite black bear seems to have been carved in the realistic style.

But many of the features of the bear are more suggested and  not well defined.

The upshot of this carving style is that the carving looks modern and somewhat abstract. The black stone enhances the suggestion of modernity. 

This bear's facial features are inquisitive and  plaintiff.
