Baker Lake carvings have a certain rudimentary, timeless and minimalist approach to them that I absolutely adore. I love the minimalist look which is signified in most older works by first generation inuit artists from the 60's and 70's.
The process to achieve this rugged and minimalist look involved using hand tools only. This is a beautiful traditional piece depicting a mother and child and shows the rugged nature and hard life of the traditional Inuit.
The gorgeous hues consisting of pinks and oranges mesh so beautifully into the dull greyish Basalt stone
This sculpture comes with an igloo tag and it is signed on the bottom.
